"The Eternal Pueblo," Inspired by Taos Pueblo in New Mexico

 

 Once again I have been inspired to paint a rendition of the Taos Pueblo, continuously in existence for centuries.  Its magic inspires the people of the pueblo and the people of the town.  Its very spirit dominates the land for peoples of the present and the future.  I first came here in the 80s just for a day to visit Taos and the pueblo.  Work on a new pueblo structure or perhaps repair on one of the existing structures prompted me to inquire about purchase of a pueblo building brick.  I still have that brick.  It has traveled to California, Nevada, and now once again back to its home here in Taos.  I never wanted to live in Taos, but here I am years later--convinced that the magic of the mountain and the pueblo is part of my own spirit.

Pueblo Morn, Limited Edition

I live in Taos, the town whose history started with this pueblo and its people.  Although the main thrust of my work is contemporary exploration of the face and psychology of what lies behind, I continue to paint pueblo images to remind me of the beauty of this area.  This piece is a limited edition, 4 of 25, almost completed covered by oil paints so that it looks much like the original.  Maybe a reminder of your visit to Taos or maybe just a bit of the past of America to brighten your walls.

"Pueblo Mini," Oil Miniature of Taos Pueblo

 

Back to more traditional artwork for a change.  I love Taos and its pueblo, so every once in a while I paint a pueblo image to be shared with others.  For those who like to remember the pueblo itself, this painting serves to do just that.  Small enough to fit into a niche and large enough to be remembered.

"Beauty of New Mexico," Oil Painting on Masonite

 

I paint many abstracted faces that appear out of mind, but every once in a while I like to paint a more realistic image.  This is one of those images.  Not any particular person, to me she personifies New Mexico in so many ways--a melding of the cultures inhabiting the land, Native American, Hispanic, Anglo, and more.  Taos Pueblo is always a part of the landscape as here in this painting.  It has survived for over 1,000 years and will continue to do so.   All is part of the land, the air, and the people.

Sometimes I just like to doodle and see what happens.  This was what happened.  The Taos Pueblo pervaded my psyche wandering in the gray matter like a traveler wandering the land.  The land is always there with new things to discover in the trek.  The Pueblo is always there and always will be--a much different emotion than when I first came here.  Unlike many who are enchanted immediately by the landscape, the architecture, the sun, and the pueblo, I felt very removed.  There is a reason that New Mexico is entitled "The Land of Enchantment."  Only after I tried to leave for the places from which I had come, did the enchantment of New Mexico embrace me.  It took about three years and now I know it will always be with me.

"Pueblo Ecstasy," Miniature Oil Painting of Taos Pueblo

 

The beat of Taos Pueblo resonates with me and I continue to paint images of it.  Those of us who live here cannot deny its power to be, to permeate the area with its being, and to remain in the hearts of those who have truly been embraced by THE MOUNTAIN.  Its power has lasted for more than a thousand years.  Tradition, history, but most of all, its people are to be admired and revered.  The Pueblo is part of this world of Taos.  So in spite, of all my contemporary work, every so often I honor my love of the pueblo and its people with a painting.

“Southwestern Touch,” Architecture Represented in Contemporary Miniature Oil Painting

The architecture of the Southwest reminiscent of the traditional Native American dwelling in New Mexico remains one of the draws to life in the Southwest.  No one talks about the maintenance problems with the flat roofs only that they have been part of the life here for centuries and will continue to be.  Those of us who live here just know that maintenance has to be on a regular basis.  The beauty of the architecture helps sustain our love of the life and culture here in New Mexico.  The architecture is part of the history and the stories which have been told for centuries.

"Southwestern Splendor," Monotype enhanced with Oil, a Reflection of Taos, New Mexico

 

I don't paint Southwestern scenes on a daily basis, but every once in a while, I like to share the beauty that surrounds my town.  It is indeed glorious and on a day like today, as I walked back from the main plaza with the sunshine on my face, I realized why I choose to live in this tiny town of about 6,500.  It has its ideosyncracies, but it is still one of the best places to live if you can overlook its shortcomings.  A very unassuming place with a mix of cultures, great art, music, and literature, and a population that warms the heart.  It is always good to come home to Taos, New Mexico.

“Southwestern Dreaming,” Miniature Oil Painting of Native American

In spite of my love for creating abstract figurative images, I also enjoy the challenge of creating a piece more representative of what most people see as the human face.  This is one of my latest efforts at doing just that.
