"The Fortune Teller," Mysticism and Color in an Oil Painting

This image was unplanned and unexpected as many of my images have appeared as if by accident.  But then there are some who say there is nothing by accident.  What part of my unconscious thinks about fortune tellers?  I have been reading The Black Book by Orhan Pamuk, a Nobel winning Turkish writer.  There is always mystique in his books as his characters wander around Istanbul.  In this book, double identities play a role, the identity we present to the world and the hidden identity or identities carried within.  Perhaps we are our own best fortune tellers if we allow it to be.

Richard Diebenkorn along with many contemporary artists incorporate traces of ink and other underlying images into a finished piece of art. A trace of color, a line, a hint at what was to make what is–just like the threads of our lives that are hidden but reveal themselves at unexpected moments.

"Glyphs of the Maya," Oil Painting Inspired by a Visit to Tikal

As early as the age of 10 long before I ever dreamed of living in the Southwest, I was intrigued by the mystique of archaeology, particularly the art and history of the Mayas, Incas, and the early civilizations of the Southwest.  I continue to be in awe at the ingenuity, the spirituality, and intelligence of these peoples.  The Mayans developed a written language, the only early civilization of the Americas to do so.  This painting is a tribute to their culture and their contributions to our American history.
