"Beauty of New Mexico," Oil Painting on Masonite

 

I paint many abstracted faces that appear out of mind, but every once in a while I like to paint a more realistic image.  This is one of those images.  Not any particular person, to me she personifies New Mexico in so many ways--a melding of the cultures inhabiting the land, Native American, Hispanic, Anglo, and more.  Taos Pueblo is always a part of the landscape as here in this painting.  It has survived for over 1,000 years and will continue to do so.   All is part of the land, the air, and the people.

"Southwestern Splendor," Monotype enhanced with Oil, a Reflection of Taos, New Mexico

 

I don't paint Southwestern scenes on a daily basis, but every once in a while, I like to share the beauty that surrounds my town.  It is indeed glorious and on a day like today, as I walked back from the main plaza with the sunshine on my face, I realized why I choose to live in this tiny town of about 6,500.  It has its ideosyncracies, but it is still one of the best places to live if you can overlook its shortcomings.  A very unassuming place with a mix of cultures, great art, music, and literature, and a population that warms the heart.  It is always good to come home to Taos, New Mexico.

“The Meditators,” a Quiet Serene Monotype enhanced with oils.

It always amazes me when I create a piece with no foregone conclusion about what it will be or how it will be finalized.  This is one of the many which have presented themselves for whatever reason.   All I can say:  there is something from deep within that wants to find its way into this crazy world with all its dysfunctionality, its wars, its cruelty to other human beings.   I continue to want for a world in which human beings are civil to one another even if they don’t agree on political principles.  We are all in this together and work together we must.

“The World at Her Fingertips,” Oil Painting of a Medieval Woman with a Contemporary Attitude”

The power of Woman!  More than I could ever imagine when growing up in a world where women were expected to follow only a limited number of careers if, indeed, they were to have careers at all.  How the world has changed!  Woman does indeed have the world at her fingertips and in her hands.  It is discouraging to me to read that a large number of women educated in some of the best schools in the country choose not to pursue their disciplines in some way upon graduation.   Are we becoming a lazy country?

Raptor on Watch, Oil Painting of Red Tailed Hawk

It has been a long winter.  Finally, spring is in the air and what better time to watch birds as they fly toward renewal and birth.  Joy, love, and light have infiltrated our beings and the animal beings around us.  So many birds flitting here and there to search out bits and pieces of this and that for feathering their nests so that eggs may be laid and babies born.  The joy I feel when watching this process prompted me to paint two bird images.  The raptor has such a shrewd eye and keen watch prompted by the shapes of paint on the paper; the other little bird is just a figment of my imagination.

Trying again to get image and narrative all in one blog.  Due to the change in browser requirements by Typepad, I have had to go to an alternative way of publishing the blog.  I have a fascination with color and the way that color can alter a face or body.  It has always been more satisfying to me to do something different with a face or figure.  Still working more on that.

Impressions of California: California Memory

There is still a part of me that misses the California coast.  The beauty of the water, the rocks, and the California poppies create a beauty different from that of the New Mexico desert.  My years in California have created an artistic sensitivity bubbling up in all my work regardless of whether the piece is figurative, landscape, or abstract.  Just like Tony Bennett "I Left my Heart in San Francisco."
