Paintings Still Being Held in Portuguese Customs; Help is Needed

 

Should I start making ransom arrangments?  No one can give me a really good consistent reason why this art work has been held for the past month.  To question the validity of this original art work is beyond the realm of rationale.  Examining the work for more than two weeks is a bit much. Just to feel the paint and inks, to smell them and to look at the work should be good enough reason to classify them as original work.  But maybe the XRay machines need to do their work. 

I have been told that my work has a European feel to it, but all should know I was born in the US, live in the US, and work in the US.  I am not copying or making posters of the work of another artist.  These pieces just appear on my canvas.  From where, I know not.

Postponement of Lisbon Show--Items Held in Portuguese Customs

 

My Lisbon show has been postponed.  The artwork has been held in Portuguese customs for three weeks, soon to be heading into the fourth week.  Why is still not clear.  There have been many different stories as to why, none of which make much sense.  Questions re:authenticity of the work, consignment, payment of duty, and more, all the hoops which I jumped through, and still the paintings are held.  Maybe the show will happen some time in the future, maybe not.

"Wacky Wizards," Oil on Canvas, A New Direction in My Abstraction

 

A new take on my contemporary faces.  Who knows what inspired these wacky wizards?  Maybe the book The Wizard of Earth Sea by Ursula Le Guin.  I read that book about three months ago--maybe it takes that long for the info to permeate the gray matter and convert into images.

This piece will be exhibited at Colorida Gallery, Lisbon, Portugal, from March 14-27.  Reception is on March 14.  Would love to see you there.

"Mountain Winter," a Contemporary Oil Painting of Taos Mountain in Winter

 

The mountains around Taos are a special place in winter regardless of whether you stand in town looking at the beauty above or whether you take advantage of winter sports in the mountains.  The snow was good the other day, something like 15 or 16 inches at the Ski Valley and supposedly more on the way.  I am not a winter sport enthusiast, but there is a kind of surreal beauty to snow which I tried to capture in this contemporary abstract painting.  The stillness of white and light is meditative and takes one back to the mystic beginnings of life on the planet.  Now if we can only maintain life on the planet so that its beauty continues.

“Balance” a Contemporary Oil Painting with Figurative and Literal Renditions of the Term

I began to wrestle with the ways that balance presents itself in the world.  So many different ways and means of representing balance.  Perhaps the most obvious began as the balance between male and female.  Each needs the other in spite of the way in which either sex may denigrate the other.  Balance demonstrated in different ways between the sexes is part of the natural world.  Then I began to play with the composition.  The moon and the red ball balance one another in form.  Red, such a powerful color, balances itself in the way it is positioned and with the other colors.  Vertical line, horizontal line, diagonal line—all play a part in balance.

 

If only the world could balance itself in the way that it treats and governs people!

"Stoic II," Monotype Included in Millicent Rogers Miniature Show

Name him what you want.  He is a creation of my mind as are my other monotyped faces.  There is just a 
fascination with the face that I can't kick--the landscape of the face.  The landscape of color, plane, features, detail--all is included in the face.  I started to create a woman's face with long hair, but this male face reminiscent of the Native American face appeared.

I created this monotype for the Millicent Rogers Miniature Show at the Millicent Rogers Museum, 504 Millicent Rogers Road, Taos, January 31 through March 2.  Reception is January 31, 5:30-7:30.

“She,” A Monoprint Honoring the History of Woman

 

This monotype was the first of my experimentations with solar prints.  This technique is done much like the way I

produced silk screened images 35 years ago.  The sun, a magnificent source of UV energy, etches the image from a “mechanical” produced in various ways and etched onto a copper based plate.  The plate is washed out, the image appears and is then printed.

 

I like this image reminiscent of the past with a touch of elegance of this era.  Woman has come a long way with still a long way to go.  The image on the right is an amorphous shape with hints of a body defined only by a few lines and color.  The form on the left becomes more defined with facial features, more definition of body as I the arm, and a definite touch of elegance.  There is no third image to show the future delineation of woman—not a bad idea which I might pursue at some time.

“Riveting,” A Monotype, Part of the Face Series

Another of the monotypes in my Face Series.  This one has eyes which can pierce into the soul with so many unanswered questions.   Most of my work, at least in my mind, has some psychological implication whether coming from a subconscious or conscious level.  I am interested in what makes man tick and what is hidden behind every face that walks along the street.   I think that is why I like to read literature of foreign authors such as Pamuk, Durrell, Llosa, etc.   Some American authors,  but those like Pynchon, delve into the inner workings of the mind, but there seems to be so much “fluff” written for pure entertainment much as TV is.

“Quietly,” Monotype, Part of Abstracted Face Series

Another face in my monotype series.   A picture of quiet contemplation.  Maybe this face reflects my need to quietly meditate about anything that comes into my head regardless of whether it be my art, the literature I read, the state of the world, color of the beautiful bird that just flew onto the storage shed, or anything else of wonder or concern.

I love to do these monotypes.  Because of the process, they are always surprising in form and finished image.  One never knows exactly what the face will look like or how the ink will appear on the paper.  It could be a huge glob or defined as in this monotype.

“Determined,” Monograph on Paper , Inspired by the Determination of a Proud People

 

Another of my monographed faces.  This face was inspired by the many faces of character that I see in the Native Americans of my town, Taos, New Mexico.  I am so inspired by the weathered lines of the face and the stories they tell or hide within.  How to paint and depict these faces so that other people may understand the history of these proud people and how they are a part of this country in which we live has become a goal of my work.

 

The other morning in that haze between deep sleep and wake, Navajo weaving came to mind.  I wove in the Navajo style for many years, but since starting to paint, have left my looms idle.  Could those early morning thoughts be a call to action for me?  Either to start weaving again or to work on the book which I started many years ago?  A book entitled Lessons of Life from the Navajo Loom.  Time will tell.
