I recently painted a series of small paintings, none larger than 6" X 6" for a show in Santa Fe at a hair salon, Hair by Anthony. Painting abstracts in such a small format was a new experience. Forget the large muscle movements associated with completion of a 48" X 48" abstract. Amazingly enough, the thought process, or lack thereof, when painting was much the same. I started by just adding paint to the canvas in color arrangements that suited me, then went from there. Did an image start to appear? Did I need to put aside the canvas and let the existent arrangement settle itself in my unconscious for another day? Or should I just paint over it and start again? Any or all of the above were the process. I found that I worked on four or five of these in a sequential line and amazingly enough, they all came together in some form.
"Small" has become a fashionable decorating concept. Several small pieces in a narrow space add interest to any room. Pieces may have a unifying theme whether color, concept, form and all may be in the same size lined up in a vertical row or combined with a larger piece in an assymetrical arrangement.
