Summer is one of my favorite times of year--green of the grass and trees, blue of the sky, and so many colors of flowers. I think I like it because it is a time of growth, not dormancy, a time when all stretch to the sky. Many years ago as a young freshman in college I rode the Rose Bowl train from Columbus, Ohio, to Pasadena, CA where a new world awaited me. I was just a country kid who had only been out of the state of Ohio on two or three occasions--W. Virginia, Kentucky, and Washington, DC when I went to the National Spelling Bee and on another occasion as a winner of Ohio American Legion Essay contest. Pasadena was different. It was winter time, but there was sunshine and flowers. I was never to forget that time and eventually went to live in CA.
