As early as the age of 10 long before I ever dreamed of living in the Southwest, I was intrigued by the mystique of archaeology, particularly the art and history of the Mayas, Incas, and the early civilizations of the Southwest.  I continue to be in awe at the ingenuity, the spirituality, and intelligence of these peoples.  The Mayans developed a written language, the only early civilization of the Americas to do so.  This painting is a tribute to their culture and their contributions to our American history.

Self Portrait of and by Charlotte "Charlee" Shroyer

A new experience for me--the first self portrait which I have ever attempted.  No wonder Rembrandt painted so many portraits of himself.  An artist can learn form, color, and technique from an always readily available model.  I had so much fun with this one that I may try another, a little more whimsical in form while still retaining some of my most pronounced features.
