Ready to embark on another series of paintings with Mayan culture as the focus. I visited Tulum in November on a magnificent fall day. The spirit of Tulum pervades the site if one only takes time to stop, listen, and feel its mystery. Set on a towering cliff above the Caribbean, one can only imagine the Mayans waiting for another trade boat to come in or go out. Since Tulum is the only Mayan site sitting on the coast and since it is known that the Mayans traded goods, we can hypothesize that Tulum was a trading center.
I have almost completed one painting with two Mayan rulers as the focal point. Much as Bridging the Gap, each stands on either side of the canvas as they engage in mythical conversation. Perhaps that conversation will become clearer as I read a book entitled Tikal: a Novel about the Maya written by Daniel Peters. Tikal is a story about the Classical Mayan period extending from around A.D. 300 to 850.
Where this mental and literary journey takes me into my painting remains to be seen. Another adventure through time, place, and space.
