Einstein never took part in the Manhattan Project but was an impetus in its creation. In 1939 Einstein was one of three scientists who warned the US that the Nazis could develop a nuclear bomb. Einstein pushed for the US to be the first to develop the bomb leading to the creation of the Manhattan Project in 1942. He was a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ from 1933 until his death in 1955 devoting much of his time and study to political and ethical questions surrounding fission and fusion. Oppenheimer became director of the Institute in 1947. He also studied ethical questions, convinced that technology must be balanced with the arts, the humanities, and more. Have we done that?
