Painting #10 of 21 at the Art Association of Harrisburg in Harrisburg, PA thru November 25, 2009
One day these women appeared on my canvas as if demanding to be seen. I only complied with their demand. There was no way to deny them. Maybe the painting is a tribute to women of the world, many of whom are still striving to find their places of equality regardless of religion, color, ethnicity or demands of the society in which they live.
I felt a strong sense of history as I painted these women almost as if I had lived through each of these transitions: woman hidden in the society of the mosque, woman bending her head beholden to the demands made of her, and woman finally emerging into a place where she could begin to express her being in other ways. The doors of light hold hope for new and exciting transitions.
